Evo Handcrank

Evolution Handcrank is an interactive installation that consists of a hand crank mechanism that illustrates the concept of evolution.

Overview

Project Proposal

My objective for this project was to investigate the idea of time. How can I present the phenomenon of time through a simple art installation?

Process

Transforming Art to interactive design

This is an interactive piece that includes a wooden box with a hand crank attached to the top. When the hand crank was used, unique animated visuals appeared, each visual morphing into something else while the crank was turned. The user is in control of the animation, a metaphorical dream. It was designed to inspire people to think about having the agency to control human evolution.

"Every process matters"

With Prof. Fred Wolflink’s help, we ended up using a rotation sensor to detect where the handle had turned, and that gave us the rotation numbers and achieved the concept of a hand crank to control the speed of the video.

This project integrates 3D video creation, hardware fabrication, and interactive software. The hand crank serves as an engaging interactive element, allowing users to control video playback. As the crank is rotated, the human evolution narrative dynamically adjusts, enabling the audience to slow down or speed up the animation, enhancing both interaction and immersion.
